Karate scholar

Three of our Sports Scholars are already celebrating medal winning performances since the start of term.

The 2017-18 BUCS league season may have only got underway a couple of weeks ago, but three of our Sports Scholars were already celebrating medal winning performances since the start of term.

At the end of September, Kristine Santos went one better than last year’s National and BUCS Championships performance to become U23 British Champion (48kg) at weightlifting. A daily visitor to our gym at Brookes Sport Headington, Kristine has been invited to compete in Cyprus in December before taking part in her first English Seniors in January and the BUCS Championships again next April.

There was also individual success for Connor Davies, who picked up bronze (kata), silver (team kata) and gold (kumite) in South-East regional Karate championships in Essex. Connor’s next competition will be the TKF Open National Championships in London in November, whilst also preparing to represent England in the ‘Tasaki Cup’ as part of the squad for the male team kumite event against teams from Switzerland, Germany, Scotland, Bulgaria, Italy and Hungary amongst others.

Last of our early medallists, but by no means least, is two-sport athlete Erin McGready. Erin celebrated her call-up to the GB Women’s U24 Ultimate Frisbee team for the World Championships in Australia in January by securing bronze with her club team (Reading) at the European Club Championships in Venice. Erin, also played in the Netball 1st team opening day win against Coventry.
