Varsity 2019 - Preview
Thursday, 14 March 2019
Brookes Sport and #TEAMBrookes are proud to announce our official fixture list for this year’s Varsity competition against the Reading Knights of Reading University.
Now in its 8th edition, Oxford Brookes holds a 5-2 overall lead having stormed the first five meetings. It seems that complacency had crept in to the #TEAMBrookes ranks, with Reading snatching the trophy in 2017 and holding on to it when they hosted in 2018. Now with Brookes looking to avoid a third successive defeat, varsity comes home to Oxford Brookes this month where our clubs and athletes will be looking to put on over on our rivals from down the A4074.
Fixtures kick off with Polo being played at Pyatt’s Farm on Wednesday March 20th, where we’ll be looking to gain an early advantage that we can capitalise on as the action continues the following Wednesday in our Equestrian match up at the Cherwell Competition Centre.
Futsal and Cricket get their time in the spotlight at the Centre for Sport on Friday 29th March, followed by the main day of action on Saturday 30th
Fixtures will kick off with our Netball 2nd team taking on their counterparts from Reading at 09:30 at Headington, with fixtures coming thick and fast from that point onwards, with the latest match of the evening taking place on the hockey pitch as our Women’s 1st look to end the day with victory.
Highlights in between will include a full complement of Rugby Union match ups held at Oxford Rugby Club, starting with our Women’s 1st at 10am, and concluding with Varsity Captain, Angus Johnson, leading out the Men’s 1st at 4pm. The Men’s 3rd and 2nd teams will be kicking off at 12pm and 2pm respectively.
Our other Varsity Captain, Alice Bates will be turning out for Women’s Football 1st at the Oxford City Stadium from 2:30pm followed by the Men’s squad taking to the pitch at 4:30pm. The rest of our football teams can be found competing at Harcourt Hill.
If you don’t already know your captains, Alice and Angus, you can find out more about them here.
Varsity is free for anyone to attend and is the biggest event in the #TEAMBrookes sporting calendar. This year we will have additional entertainment provided on the day by the Oxford Brookes Events Management Society along with a barbeque by Breton in front of the Sports Centre at Headington (weather permitting).
You can register your interest in the event on our Facebook page here, or take a look at the Oxford Brookes University events page here. Come along to support your University, your team, and your friends! Your support could mean the difference between Brookes regaining the trophy, or the title staying with Reading for a third consecutive year.
In the meantime, take a look at the video below from last year’s visit to Reading to get an idea of what Varsity is all about!
