Varsity 2020 - Stan and Erin

Introducing Erin McGready and Stan Disbury, your 2020 Varsity Captains

Our two captains act as the face of #TEAMBrookes for the 9th annual Varsity event against The Reading Knights – where Oxford Brookes currently hold an overall lead of 6-2 – and will hope to lead all of the #TEAMBrookes clubs and athletes to another victory.

Two years ago, at our last visit to the Whiteknights campus, Reading took a narrow victory and it looked like the return fixture hosted by Brookes would also be another tight fixture… but with Brookes seemingly more up for it than in any previous year, #TEAMBrookes served up a landslide victory. You can check out our Varsity 2019 video at the bottom of this page.

Stan and Erin

This year, we are taking the fight to Reading and aiming to pick up the victory and retain the trophy away from home.

Ahead of the big day we met up with Erin and Stan to find out a little more about them.

How did you get into your sport? I started playing netball at primary school and joined a club at a young age, then I started frisbee at secondary school

Favourite personal sporting moment: Beating Leicester in the top of the league clash, in the final quarter last year to win the league

Do you get nervous ahead of matches? No not really, I try to keep a calm head.

If you could compete at a different sport, what would it be? Track cycling

Have you been part of Varsity before - what was it like? Yes, one of the many sporting highlights of my years at Brookes

Tell us about your teammates and club: The girls at OBUNC have made my uni experience an unforgettable one, continuously making me laugh and inspiring me to push myself to be the best I can be. Being president to these girls is an absolute honour. As for the frisbee team, we are a team that never give up, facing harder teams and new challenges each year.

Are there any fixtures in particular you will be looking out for in Reading? No sport in particular, but I can’t wait to watch as many games as I can

What are your predictions for Varsity 2020? it can only be Brookes!

Boxing

Nickname: Diz

Age: 22

Course: Sports, Coaching and Physical Education

Favourite movie: It's a close call between Gladiator and Hot Fuzz

Favourite TV show: Prison Break

Favourite food: A Sunday roast, or anything with lots of halloumi

Sporting icon: Sugar Ray Leonard, or Mark Noble - West Ham legend!

How did you get into your sport?  I’ve been a big boxing fan for as long as I can remember but didn’t start until I was 17/18. A friend showed me the ropes and I’ve been hooked ever since

Favourite personal sporting moment: Bronze Medal at the University Box Cup

Do you get nervous ahead of fights?  In the build up to a fight I’m always nervous as you train for months for one competition. Once I’m in the ring though I try to stay relaxed and enjoy it as that’s when I perform best

If you could compete at a different sport, what would it be? If I had to chose I’d love to play Rugby again as it’s got a balance of skill and physicality, although I wouldn’t last long as most rugby players are twice the size of me

Have you been part of Varsity before - what was it like? This year is the first boxing varsity, so I’ve never been properly involved but previous years I’m usually stood on a side-line showing my support

Tell us about your teammates and club: Boxing is an individual sport that often involves sparring teammates which can get very competitive. However, the respect and bond between me and my teammates from training hard together makes us one big family. We also have a brilliant coach who makes every session interesting

Are there any fixtures in particular you will be looking out for in Reading? Of course all of the boxing match-ups but I’ll be looking forward to watching OBUWRFC getting the win as I think it will be close but Brookes just takes it

What are your predictions for Varsity 2020? I predict that Brookes makes Varsity great again!!

Erin competes for both Netball and Ultimate Frisbee – you can find them both on Instagram at @OBUNC and @OBUUFC respectively.
