Work placement students at the re-engagement conference

A Re-engagement Conference for the current Oxford Brookes Business School (OBBS) work placement students took place in April.

The event was a great success with over 70 students attending.

For many of the students the highlight of the day (apart from the food, exploring the new Business School location and networking) was the guest speakers.

Vikki Claridge, Placements Manager at Harley Davidson, held the students in awe with various clips of bike races, while Bob Shankly, Director of Human Resources at BMW, kindly shared some important insights into graduate recruitment.

Bob Shankly reinforced a number of key messages:

  • Be yourself.
  • Have evidence to ‘show and tell’ to illustrate your key knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Use your placement as an advantage to demonstrate your knowledge skills and abilities.

The event brought students back together in preparation for their final year at Oxford Brookes, and explored the importance of a work-based placement. The event concluded that a work placement experience improved students’ final year performance and greatly enhanced their employability prospects.

As Suze Mathews, Module Leader of the OBBS Placement Module, remarked:

‘Work placements offer our students one of the best opportunities to understand the  working world and to make sense of what their business/finance/marketing degrees really mean. This event gives the Business School an opportunity to help the students focus on their final year and then onwards to their career as Brookes graduates.’
