Ian has been a lecturer for over 20 years across a wide range of topics centred on information and information systems in both computing and business & management departments.
Ian has taught computing and information systems modules for several Universities at undergraduate level and was an External Examiner for the University of Exeter. Most recently he has taught various Knowledge Management, Decision Making and Information Systems modules at post graduate level at the University of Southampton. He currently teaches information systems related undergraduate modules and Research Methods at under graduate and post graduate levels at Brookes.
Ian was working on a PhD at the University of Southampton, School of Management where he also did some postgraduate teaching. His research is into the use of narrative techniques in the transfer of tacit organizational knowledge within communities of practice. His research domain is the maritime sector based around the Solent and central South coast of England. This research is qualitative and ethnographic in nature and relies on interview transcripts which are analysed using specialized qualitative software.
Other areas of research interest include Human Activity Systems and Soft Systems; Knowledge Management; and technology enhanced learning.

Ian graduated from the University of Lancaster with a degree in Physics in 1977 and joined British Hovercraft Corporation (Westland Group) as a Test Engineer at their R&D establishment on the Isle of Wight, eventually becoming Assistant Chief Designer of an Aerospace and Defence electronics company within the Westland Group. During this time he was an MoD and CAA approved signatory for the release of equipment for flight.
In 1988 he joined an IBM Value Added Retailer as the Technical Support Manager coordinating a team of engineers covering the Isle of Wight, Dorset, Hampshire and West Sussex as well as providing pre and post-sales support. He then became the I.T. Manager of a company within the Christian Salvesen group, overseeing the implementation of an MRP system. Following this he became the IT Manager of the newly formed Business Link (Isle of Wight).
In 1995 Ian moved into lecturing initially in Further Education but eventually in Higher Education. This covered computing and business & management. During this time he gained a Cert.Ed.(FE/HE) teaching qualification.
Ian gained an M.Sc.(SocSci) with Distinction in Knowledge and Information Systems Management from the University of Southampton in 2008 and commenced a PhD there soon after, having been awarded a School scholarship.
He commenced at Brookes in September 2012 where he has taught on a variety of information systems related modules and has led modules including Analytical Techniques for Business and Management as well as Maths for Decision Making.
