Training and Development for Early Career Researchers (ECRs)
Thursday, 07 December 2017
On 07 December 2017, 13 OBBS PhD students attended an interactive workshop on finding and securing postdoctoral fellowship applications.
An OBBS Grant Panel initiative, the three-hour session was hosted by Dr Joanna Karmowska, Grant Panel Chair, Dr Ioanna Iordanou, Grant Panel Member, and Dr Claire Bunyan, who leaves the University this week to take up a Research Fellowship at UCL.
As part of the Grant Panel’s remit to improve the quality of OBBS research grant applications, Dr Karmowska is hoping to encourage greater engagement of ECRs with bidding for funding – including provision of support for doctoral students in pursuing postdoctoral opportunities. Last Thursday’s session focused on potential sources of funding, strategies for developing publications alongside doctoral study and techniques for persuasive writing within fellowship applications. Reflecting on the workshop, Dr Karmowska commented that “it was encouraging to see many of our most talented students considering a postdoctoral fellowship as the next step in their careers after PhD study. The feedback has been extremely positive and there is evidently value in supporting students with both information and targeted advice on application technique.”
