Nursing (Adult) - Pre-Registration

Adult nurses need to be able to demonstrate competence in the fundamentals of nursing care across the patient’s lifespan. We recognise that as the context of healthcare delivery is changing, it is essential for nurses to be able to work flexibly, inter-professionally and collaboratively in a way that is meaningful and relevant.

Our curriculum is designed to give graduating Adult Nurses the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to influence improvements in practice, and support them to develop their own professional responsibility towards advancing the profession.

Our master's degree gives you the chance to undertake an Adult Nursing course leading to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The PG Cert second registration course offers qualified nurses (child, mental health or learning disability) the opportunity to gain registration as a registered adult nurse whilst also receiving an academic award. Both courses are available part-time and full-time on the Oxford and Swindon campuses.

Professional accreditation

The course prepares students to become nurses who are eligible for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Professional Register for Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors in the designated field of practice (Adult, Children’s and Mental Health),  as well as carrying the academic award of a Master’s degree.

The course meets the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards for Pre-registration Nursing Education (2010) and the requirements for the professional award.

Our nursing curriculum has been developed in partnership with students, clinical partners, mentors, service users and carers, as well as acknowledgement of key local, national and international drivers. It follows a ‘spiral' design to ensure that your learning in both practice and the University is structured incrementally from one year to the next with a specific focus for each year. Early in the programme, the same modules are taken by all three fields of nursing (Children’s, Mental Health and Adult), with some shared learning with students on the BSc Nursing (Adult / Children’s / Mental Health) pre-registration programmes. In each year of the programme, you will have placements in your field of practice, with some taught content specific to your nursing field. However, there is increasing nursing field specialisation as the programme progresses. There is also a progressive shift in focus on levels of complexity of nursing interventions, as indicated below.

  • Year 1 focuses on communities (local and national), health and well-being, lifespan and values. 
  • Year 2 enables you to explore specific nursing interventions, working in partnership with patients and their families to meet care outcomes. 
  • Year 3 focuses on care of people with complex health needs, including those who may have numerous problems; this requires health and social care services to be integrated to promote optimal health outcomes. The focus in this year of study is primarily in your designated field of nursing practice.

A key aim is to help you to develop as a nurse and leader, working independently and with others to develop the skills, evidence-based knowledge and research capability to underpin your practice and to challenge and evolve new ideas for health. Central to this achievement, you will learn to work collaboratively in teams, with individuals, families and communities. Subject to availability, there is the option of a community focused final year of your programme. Your leadership skills and forward thinking will be developed through action learning sets alongside the taught and practice modules. 

The independent study modules and the dissertation provide opportunities to build upon your prior learning and experience. You will draw upon a wide range of modules, resources and staff in the University and our practice partners to create exciting and individual outcomes.

During Year 1 you undertake modules at Level 6 (honours level), and in the subsequent two years your modules will be at Level 7 (master's degree level). You may be able to complete the degree in less than three years if you offer evidence of relevant prior learning (AP(E)L). This may have been achieved through relevant degree level study and experience.  If you wish to study part-time, you can complete the degree over a maximum duration of eight years. 

You will develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of nursing, including in your own field of practice, informed by scholarship and research as well as critical awareness of current issues/development in the field. You will acquire specific skills, knowledge and competence in your chosen field and more broadly will be enquiry focused, reflective, innovative, confident and self-aware.

MSc

Year 1

Education in Nursing Practice 1

This module gives you an introduction to nursing practice within the context of your field of practice. You will have an introduction to foundation nursing knowledge and skills prior to starting your first practice placement.

Education in Nursing Practice 2

You will be introduced to new knowledge and skills that facilitate increased participation in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care. You will be encouraged to consider the health of people within their practice population, and factors that impact upon the uptake of health promotion and prevention strategies within that population.

Nursing Fundamentals : Family Health and Wellbeing 1

You will be introduced to the values, beliefs and factors that influence and underpin health and wellbeing from an individual, family and societal perspective recognising diversity. You will reflect on how self-awareness and professional responsibility contribute to the development of the nurse and nursing.

Nursing Fundamentals: Family Health and Wellbeing 2

This module introduces the underpinning frameworks and responsibilities for the organisation, assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of holistic family/person-centred and compassionate nursing care in a variety of settings. It explores physiological, psychological, societal, political and global influences on health and social care across the lifespan, recognising inequalities.

Year 2

Education in Nursing Practice 3

This module gives you the opportunity to develop knowledge and apply a range of theoretical principles to practice that will promote effective communication and interpersonal relationships to enhance clinical decision making and evidence based nursing practice.

Education in Nursing Practice 4

This module helps you build upon and acquire new knowledge and skills for clinical practice that will further explore ethical concepts and professional standards to support the care and self/family management of people within varied clinical settings.

Collaborative Nursing Practice

This practice related module enables you to gain insight into how the diverse experiences of people and their families inform all stages of the nursing process in the delivery of physical and mental health care.

Independent study 

This module offers you the opportunity to build on existing knowledge and professional experience and study, in-depth, an aspect of health care relating to children, young people, adults and families' health care practice.

Advanced Research Design 

This module equips you with skills to find, appraise and utilise research, as well as plan and design a piece of research work. It helps you define a suitable research question and identify appropriate research methodologies for a small-scale research project or dissertation.

Year 3

Education in Nursing Practice 5

This module gives you the opportunity to build upon and acquire new knowledge and skills for clinical practice that will further explore ethical concepts and professional standards to support the care and self/family management of people within varied clinical settings.

Education in Nursing Practice 6

You will get the opportunity to consolidate the skills, knowledge and strategies required to be an effective independent registrant.

Nursing Management of Adult with complex care needs

This module provides adult nursing students with the knowledge, skills and strategies to develop problem solving and decision making skills that will enable you to undertake assessment and management of complex situations in a variety of adult nursing settings.

Dissertation

This module draws together and enhances your ability to utilise the knowledge, understanding and skills developed previously across the whole programme, in a piece of investigative or literature-based research or a service improvement project. 

PGCert

The PGCert is delivered at academic level 7 over one year and is designed to prepare postgraduate, post qualifying students to achieve the requirements for entry for an additional entry on the NMC nursing register. In the same way as the pre-registration masters programme, a key aim of the postgraduate certificate is to help you to develop  as a nurse and leader, working independently and with others to develop the skills, evidence-based knowledge and research capability to underpin your practice and to challenge and evolve new ideas for health. Central to this achievement, you will learn to work collaboratively in teams, with individuals, families and communities. You will develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of nursing, including in your own field of practice, informed by scholarship and research as well as critical awareness of current issues/development in the field. You will acquire specific skills, knowledge and competence in your chosen field and more broadly will be enquiry-focused, reflective, innovative, confident and self-aware. The programme is made up of modules in the masters programme include:

Independent Study

This module gives you the opportunity to build on existing knowledge and professional experience and study, in-depth, an aspect of health care pertinent to children, young people, adults and/or families' health care practice.  For the PGcert this module is used to identify learning outcomes required to meet any outstanding areas of the NMC Standards not covered within the PG Cert curriculum or the student’s previous learning.  

Collaborative Nursing (field specific)

This practice-related module enables you to build upon knowledge, skills and understanding gained from prior and concurrent study and practice within one field of nursing, integrating and applying this learning within an additional field of practice. Whilst focusing on module learning outcomes specific to this additional field of nursing practice, students will further develop insight into the diverse experiences and needs of people and their families in order to undertake nursing care of people and their families in the additional field of practice.

Nursing Management of Adult with Complex Care Needs

This module provides adult nursing students with the knowledge, skills and strategies to develop problem solving and decision making skills that will enable you to undertake assessment and management of complex situations in a variety of adult nursing settings.

Education in Nursing Practice 5

This module gives you the opportunity to build upon and acquire new knowledge and skills for clinical practice that will further explore ethical concepts and professional standards to support the care and self/family management of people within varied clinical settings.

Education in Nursing Practice 6

You will get the opportunity to consolidate the skills, knowledge and strategies required to be an effective independent registrant in your additional field of practice.

Teaching and learning

We take a student-centred approach to teaching and learning and are strongly focused on encouraging you to attain your full potential as a lifelong learner. 

Our curriculum's educational approach is based on how learners come to education courses with sets of established beliefs and values and how through critical reflection on these beliefs, perspectives can be changed and transformed.

You will learn with students from your own and other fields of nursing (children’s nursing and mental health nursing) at the start of the course, with learning becoming more complex and field specific as you progress. In health and social care, no professional group works in isolation. Learning to work collaboratively with others is a key component of the course, as it is essential in developing your teamwork skills and your understanding of others with different roles, who you will encounter in practice.

Your learning will be facilitated in partnership with practice and academic staff who meet professional standards and guidance. They will value you as an individual, enhance your strengths and challenge you in order that you can develop academically, personally and professionally. 

You will be encouraged to learn by discovery helping you to identify your strengths and areas for development. You can then reach your personal and professional potential and become a confident, safe and effective professional registered nurse.

Learning will be facilitated by a range of approaches during both the practice and university experiences such as:

  • Experiential learning: practice learning, simulation, action-learning, debate and discussion, reflection. 
  • Mentoring, coaching and supervising: questioning, challenging, supporting, observing, giving and receiving feedback 
  • Active learning: projects, role-play, educating others such as patients, the public or peers. 
  • Student-centred learning: self-assessment, reading, finding evidence, production of resources 
  • Blended and online learning: using digital resources such as 'virtual family', quizzes, specialist lectures 
  • Use of technology and informatics: social media and networking, mobile health (mHealth), Electronic Patient Records (EPR), big data and the professional boundaries required when using such technology. 
  • Collaborative learning with other disciplines, interprofessional learning, cultures and agencies: multi-professional team working and simulation, exploring global perspectives 
  • Problem-based/solution-focused learning: small group working using complex, multi-faceted scenarios, prioritising or decision making in practice. 
  • Simulation Based Education (SBE): defined as any educational activity that uses simulation aides to replicate clinical scenarios. SBE activities will take place in the safe learning environment of the clinical skills suites which replicates both community and acute settings. During SBE sessions you will have the opportunity to learn and refine both technical and non-technical skills including situational awareness and human factors.

Information technology plays an increasingly important role in health care courses, and a very extensive range of learning resources can be accessed through Moodle, an online repository of lectures, handouts, information and learning exercises. Several modules use a virtual family as part of the learning experience. This consists of an imaginary family in a range of scenarios to provide interactive case studies, for exploration at different points in the modular course.

As an MSc (pre-registration) or PGCert student you will work alongside other Master's students as well as the undergraduate Nursing BSc (Hons) students in some of the profession specific modules. Differences between the programmes are clearly defined by your own specific curricula and assessment strategies with level of attainment expected per the university level specific marking criteria. Dual level teaching will afford you the opportunity to learn the core skills and specific attributes of Nursing alongside the BSc students. However, in recognition of your graduate attributes on entry, you will be offered: an enhanced learning experience. This will take the shape of: 

 

  • Tutorials specific to support and prepare you for masters level assessment.
  • Online discussion, to enable collaboration and interaction between your MSc peers from both your own professional group, and across the professions and members of the programme team. 
  • Collaborative Learning Sets with other Master's students.

 

Approach to assessment

Our course team is committed to supporting your academic skills development and maximising your potential to succeed. Module assignments have been designed and selected to enable you to demonstrate the learning outcomes for each module and cumulatively the overall programme learning outcomes.

Assessment feedback is intended to shape and develop your learning. It is fundamental and directly linked to the programme and module learning outcomes. Assessment and feedback approaches will help you to develop your learning needed for your future working life.

The range, type and timing of programme assessment has been carefully selected to enable you to become independent and reflective learners and to develop and demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed to meet the programme learning outcomes as you progress through the course. All modules have an assessment component which requires you to explicitly demonstrate an understanding of how the module theory informs and enhances patient care. Examples of assessments include reflective essays, presentations, clinical examinations, multiple choice examinations, neighbourhood studies, case studies.

Assessment of practice learning occurs within the credit rated Education in Nursing Practice modules and must be passed to fulfil the professional requirements for the programme and ensure that you are eligible for registration as a Nurse. Practice will be assessed by a mentor selected on the basis of having the necessary qualifications to function as a practice assessor as per the NMC Pre-registration Standards (2010).

As a postgraduate student with more highly developed academic skills and a self-directed approach, you are expected to work to produce material that is creative and original. You will be encouraged to try out the creative application of new or existing ideas or theory to address contemporary practice problems, health and social care policy or health and social care needs.

We also have excellent library resources, accessible both through the web and through a range of locally based facilities on university and NHS sites. Your practice learning experiences (or placements) will be organised in a ‘hub’ and ‘spoke’ model. Throughout the nursing programme you will be allocated to ‘hub’ placement areas where you will be assigned a named mentor / sign-off mentor. During these placements, you will be able to gain experiences and skills to achieve the required competencies. You will usually be allocated to two hub placement areas over the course of each year. Whilst on your 'hub' placements, you will become part of the clinical team and gain valuable insights into the functioning of the practice areas and nursing career opportunities. Our students highly rate this placement approach, as it helps them feel more confident and competent as the year progresses.

The Nursing & Midwifery Council mandates that all pre-registration nursing programmes must consist of at least 4,600 hours of student effort split 50/50 between theory and practice. This means that all students will be required to complete two unpaid practice placements per year amounting to approximately 770 hours of practice per year and must achieve 2,300 hours of practice (including some simulation based education) over the three years of the programme.

Funding and scholarships

For 2017 entry, students from the UK and EU will have their fees paid by the HETV/ HESW, and will be eligible to apply for a means tested bursary even if they have previously received public funding for higher education. This does not apply to PGCert students.

Please click on this link to access the application form for the Tessa Jane Evans Bursary for Nursing, designed to assist trainee student nurses with living expenses. The Bursary is open to mature, Home/EU students who are in financial need and without other funding, and would find it difficult financially to undertake the 3 year Pre-Registration course for the University’s BSc (Hons) or MSc (Hons) programme in Adult Nursing Degree.   

Entry requirements

Honours degree 2.2 or above (or equivalent), preferably in a health/science related subject. We will however also consider applications from graduates with non-health related degrees.

  • GCSE Maths, Science and English at Grade C or above, or equivalent
  • two recent references, at least one academic
  • experience of paid or voluntary work within a health care environment, or relevant to your chosen field
  • successful performance in the selection process (including an individual interview)
  • Occupational Health Clearance and Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance. If neither clearance has been completed prior to enrolment or a DBS issue has been declared on application, then enrolment may not be possible. If enrolment has been agreed, then continuation on the programme will be contingent on satisfactory clearances.

All applicants will be screened for fitness for practice and a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be made.

How this course helps you develop

The Adult Nursing course at Brookes has an excellent track record of employability (100% of our students are at work within six months of finishing the course - Unistats: 2015).

Registered Adult Nurses have the opportunity, post-qualification, to develop their careers in many specialist settings, such as intensive care units, accident and emergency departments, operating theatres or specialist wards where medical or surgical treatment is given. They can also work in the community, within district or practice nursing, in industry, or in the private health care sector. Opportunities also exist to work abroad, for the Armed Forces or to specialise in research, nurse education or management.

The newly established Oxford Institute of Nursing and Allied Health Research (OxINAHR), can provide interested nursing graduates with a structured research career pathway opportunity, developed in partnership with local NHS partners.

Our academic staff have extensive experience of NHS and general management at both senior and director level. They also have a significant record of research and publications on the topics of management and leadership. The currency of the course is also assured by the lecturers' close involvement in the health and social care sector and their movement between that sector and education.

Research areas and clusters

We have a number of both promising and experienced researchers working in established areas including cancer care, children and families, drugs and alcohol, physical rehabilitation and enablement, and interprofessional education and collaborative practice. Over the past few years, these researchers have won external research and consultancy contracts including grants, fellowships and studentships for NHS staff. Our research staff collaborate with researchers from across Oxford Brookes University and from the Institute of Health Sciences at Oxford University, and with research teams from many other UK and international centres.
