This exciting and innovative programme is for students interested in the areas of entrepreneurship and innovation.  It is equally valuable either for those wanting to set up their own business (entrepreneurs), or those wanting to pursue a career in an already established organisation (intrapreneurs).  

During your studies you will identify and work on an idea that supports your personal career aspirations, you will develop that idea throughout the programme whilst improving your understanding of your entrepreneurial self.

The first part of the course supports you in developing your idea (including a field trip) , the second part provides you with the skills needed to put it into practice.  The programme includes guest lectures and and optional company visits through international study trips.

You will also develop a number of key employability skills (eg: flexibility, agility, resilience) that are increasingly important in today’s rapidly changing world.

This programme allows students to undertake a unique journey tailored to their individual interests and aspirations. You will be working with teaching staff who are passionate about entrepreneurship and innovation education, and have extensive experience both within academia and the business world.

Throughout the programme you will have the opportunity to work on an idea that supports your entrepreneurial or intrapreneurial aspirations. As such the programme is very practice-oriented and aims to link academic theory with practice. Tutors will work with you throughout on developing/refining your idea to ensure that it is a good fit for you and enables your future career plans. There will be support available from both academics and entrepreneurs for the duration of your studies.

A key feature of this programme is the Block Session (Field Trip), where students spend an intensive few days off campus early in the programme. As well as providing a great opportunity for students to get to know each other, the objective is for the group to experience teaching and learning in a non-traditional environment to encourage them to think differently and creatively.

Students will also have the opportunity to participate in international study trips. As well as visiting global organisations and meeting senior management within those organisations, students will work with their peers from other programmes and meet alumni.

Creativity to Insight to Action: This is an integrative module which pulls together and synthesises material from other modules in addition to including some new content. It is the ‘core’ of the student journey throughout the programme, and provides students with the opportunity to develop both themselves and their idea by reflecting on the linkages between their entrepreneurial self, their idea, and the material from this and other modules.

Entrepreneurial Theory & Practice: This module introduces the conceptual underpinning necessary to understand the nature of enterprise and entrepreneurship, and also helps develop vital entrepreneurial skills, behaviours and practices necessary for success.

Innovation and Futures: Here students will gain insight into innovation theories and practices, and how they influence individual businesses and complete industries. As such, there will also be a particular emphasis on the impact of technology development as a driver for innovation. This focus on Innovation as a source of Insight will also be matched with a study of Futures tools, techniques and contingencies to develop the capability of generating Foresight, as regards business and technology trends and trajectories.

Research Methods for Innovation: This module is designed to develop a broad understanding of the requirements to successfully design, conduct, and evaluate research into a specific value proposition.

Social Enterprise and Social Innovation: Social entrepreneurship has emerged in the last decades as the process by which citizens take an active role in tackling social challenges through enterprise development. The central aim of the module is to develop students’ understanding of these new and emerging paradigms within entrepreneurship.

Project Management and Change Leadership: Students will assess the approaches that may be taken towards the management of projects, and will practice a range of techniques used by professional project managers to plan, control and deliver projects successfully. In addition to the ‘hard’ skills around project management, this module also covers an introduction to change management, so that students are equipped with an effective balance of both ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ knowledge and skills.

Planning for New Business Ventures: This module aims to develop the necessary business planning skills for those students who intend to start and run their own businesses, or who may become involved in the growth of an existing business.

Capstone Module Choice: You will have a choice of four capstone options, allowing you to select the one that best suits your academic interests or future career plans.

  • Dissertation: This is an opportunity for you to carry out an in depth investigation into a topic of Entrepreneurship and Innovation which is of particular interest to you. It should have an appropriately clear focus and be an investigation based on primary and/or secondary data, justified and supported by detailed reference to relevant theories and concepts from literature.
  • Client Project: You have the opportunity to link theory to practice by analysing a real organisational issue. Having identified a project (with the approval of both the client company and the Module Leader) you investigate a particular issue, one that can be supported through the relevant literature and by conducting primary research with the client. This module is not an internship but can be taken in conjunction with an internship. The 'issue' in question may be a current management problem for the client organisation or related to future strategic choices. The Client Project provides you with a significant learning and personal development experience.
  • Business Start-Up: This module is an alternative to the dissertation, client project, or design project. It is aimed at those students who genuinely intend to start a new business venture in the immediate time-frame. The deliverable from the module is a robust business plan containing a portfolio of documents such as a mid-year forecast, cash flow statement, risk assessment etc. for a new venture that is assessed by a panel of academic and practitioner start-up experts.
  • Design Project: this module is intended to accommodate those students who want to progress their idea but are not yet ready to undertake the Business Start-Up module. The module provides students with the opportunity to link theory to practice by undertaking a genuine design and development activity using a design-based methodology. It will provide students with a significant learning and personal development experience and allow them to further progress their idea.

Specialist facilities

Oxford Brookes Business School has now moved to its new home at our Headington Campus. The university’s Headington Campus have undergone a £30m refurbishment to provide a new home for the Business School, which consists of a lecture theatre, teaching rooms, social learning space and a café. There is a new modern hall for teaching and special events like graduation.

This new home will help us to collaborate even more closely with university colleagues in other departments. It also provides a new Main Hall and a vibrant gateway into the Headington Campus. With these innovative spaces, students and staff can interact and collaborate in first-class facilities.

The Headington Campus is also home to the new John Henry Brookes Building, being the most significant project in the history of Oxford Brookes University. Set at the heart of our Headington campus, it has been designed for the future of higher education and has transformed the experiences of our students and the entire University community. The John Henry Brookes Building brings together the library and essential support services that offer academic, careers and international student advice. Field trips

We offer an International Business in Practice Study Trip module. The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.

This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. If you successfully complete this module you will have the following non-credit bearing module recorded on your transcript: P58335 International Business in Practice: Study Trip.

Whilst the destination and therefore precise costs vary from year to year, as an example, the programme fee of the study trip to Boston USA in July 2019 was £1580, which included 7 nights’ accommodation in the Boston area, insurance, the company visits (e.g. Facebook, Dunkin Brands, Trip Advisor, Microsoft, Bank of America), group transportation for all activities and some of the meals, but excluded for example International airfare, Visa application fee (if relevant), dinners and activities during your free time.

We also run a study trip to Chengdu, China.

If you choose the study trip, you will be provided with additional details regarding the trip (which runs in July) by March, in order to inform decision making, ahead of the trip in July.

Where part time fees are quoted this is for the first year only. Fees will increase by up to 4% each year.

Funding and scholarships

The Department of Business and Management is pleased to offer scholarships in all disciplines for students wishing to undertake full-time taught postgraduate MSc programmes. Some part-time courses may be eligible for scholarships for UK and EU applicants.

Applicants to this course are eligible to apply for a Simon Williams scholarship.

Scholarships will be awarded for academic excellence and each award will be paid towards the tuition fee for a taught master's degree. These scholarships do not include a maintenance grant.

Entry requirements

A minimum of a second class honours degree (2:2) in any academic discipline, or equivalent overseas degree from a recognised institution or equivalent professional or other qualification.

Applicants who possess a diploma rather than a degree may be eligible for entry provided they have compensatory work experience and can demonstrate career development.

This course attracts students from a wide range of backgrounds and nationalities. Applications are welcome from those in work and seeking continuing professional development.

Entry will also be subject to two satisfactory references (one of these must be an academic reference).

English language requirements

If English is not your first language you will need to satisfy the university's English language requirements:

  • IELTS minimum level 6.0, (with a minimum of 6.0 in reading and writing, and 5.5 in listening and speaking).
  • If you have completed your undergraduate degree in the UK (at least one full year of study) you will automatically meet our English language requirements

This course combine the pre-master's diploma and your master's in one application. You can apply for one visa for the two years of study.
  • If you need to improve your English language, we have pre-sessional English language courses available to help you to meet the English language requirements of your chosen master’s.

How this course helps you develop

The nature of this programme will allow students to develop their self-awareness (through reflection and the application of programme material studied to a ‘real’ idea) so that they are able to make a fully informed decision on appropriate next steps.

This programme was designed to support the following objectives:

For entrepreneurs: those students wishing to set up their own business, this programme will improve their chance of success in starting their own organisation

For intrapreneurs: those students wishing to work in an already established organisation, this programme will equip them for the corporate world

The programme will provide students with:

  • The opportunity to test ideas in a safe environment, thereby increasing the probability of later success
  • An improved network – of tutors, fellow students, and entrepreneurs who visit to support assessment activities and/or deliver guest lectures
  • Enhanced employability skills – through developing their entrepreneurial self, through group-work and other module activities. Skills developed include (but are not limited to): creative thinking and problem-solving, leadership, negotiation and influencing, teamwork and communication, self-management, change management.
  • Greater knowledge – through the comprehensive and varied material covered
  • A different perspective – by working within a highly diverse student cohort, and with a number of tutors with varied experience and backgrounds

Careers

You will graduate with highly relevant knowledge as well as practical experiences on how to manage different functional units in organisations.

Many of our graduates find managerial positions at a wide range of organisations, including companies producing fast moving commercial goods, airlines, financial institutions, retail giants and charities.

Examples of these employers include: Deutsche Telekom, Deloitte, Oxfam, BASF Group, Kautex Unipart, Raiffeisen Bank, Revolution Insurance, American Business Conferences, Consilio Global.
