Overview

We are accepting applications from outstanding doctoral candidates to work with a team of researchers that are part of the Technology in Professional Services (TiPS), a new major research project, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and Innovate UK organisation that will help accountancy and law firms to accelerate technological adoption, and the Oxford Regions, Innovation and Enterprise Lab (ORIEL).

Indicative themes based on expertise of supervisory team and TiPS aims: 

  • Debates around technological adoption, its role in innovation in professional firms
  • The impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Law and Accountancy firms
  • Digital Transformation and new business models 
  • The role of Data in innovation and the professional services
  • New methodologies to investigate technological adoption
  • Factors that promote/prevent technological adoption in professional firms.

Previous experience in accountancy and law is not required, yet we strongly encourage applicants with interest and some understanding in the professional services.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a good undergraduate degree and a Master’s degree at merit level or above in a relevant area of the social sciences. Applicants should demonstrate strong research capabilities and be fluent in spoken and written English.

Applications should include a Cover Letter, CV, Research Proposal and all the supporting documents specified on the business and management application website.

  • Cover letter: Introduce yourself and summarise how the advertised position fits your research  interests and career ambitions.
  • Research proposal (approximately 2000 words): including a description of your research interests and how these and the proposed project relate the indicative themes listed above. Please also include a detailed description of a proposed doctoral project including research questions, design, and methodology. Consider including a discussion of what skills you already possess in order to execute the proposed project as well as those that you hope to acquire and develop over the studentship with the guidance and mentorship of the supervisory team.

Application process

Potential candidates will be invited to meet and interview with the supervisory team. During the interview, candidates will be asked to present their proposed research project. We strongly encourage interested candidates to contact the member(s) of the supervisory team to have a preliminary discussion about the post, pose any questions, and discuss fit.

Deadline: The closing date for applications is 3 November 2023

Interview date: Online interviews will be held between 7 and 8 November 2023
