    The Joining Technology Research Centre at Oxford Brookes is recognised as one of the leading establishments providing industry with access to a unique combination of engineering and scientific skills in the UK today. The foundations of JTRC go back to 1968 and the Centre has since established an international reputation for its interdisciplinary approach to joining problems. In particular, the research team has undertaken a considerable amount of research and development, and has participated in a wide range of knowledge transfer activities, in the use of adhesives and sealants for the aerospace, automotive and construction sectors.

      Network for the design for dismantling, reuse and recycling in road vehicles. This project examines the whole lifecycle of the car – from raw materials, to design, assembly of components, manufacture, disassembly, recycling and reuse of components and materials. Coordinator Dr Pat Winfield said "We look at vehicle design, materials and components, how they can be assembled and dis-assembled cost-effectively, and how they can be reused".

      UK DTI-funded project (April 2002 - May 2005) to facilitate the better use of composite materials systems in the construction industry. The project was managed by Oxford Brookes University, with support from AEA Technology (now ESR Technology Ltd.), Mouchel Parkman, and Tony Gee & Partners.

      A large Industrial Advisory Group was formed to provide guidance, materials and cash contributions to the project. Hythe Bridge Street Fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) materials are used increasingly in a large range of applications, in both new build and repair, as well as in conjunction with adhesives and laminating resins. The growth in the use of composite materials systems for different applications involving concrete, metallic and timber structures has highlighted the need for more guidance on the design, application and approval processes. Procedures were developed for the assessment of materials systems on site, involving the development of manufacturing techniques for on-site fabrication of reliable and consistent test pieces.

      Design and application guidance was compiled that draws upon performance requirements as well as being informed by experience. Case histories were used to further reinforce the guidance. The major outputs from this project included classification and qualification schemes, together with guidance on their implementation, test protocols (laboratory and site-based), QC test acceptance criteria and practical application guidance.

    Our team includes engineers and chemists who have worked with sealants over many years and developed considerable expertise in sealant formulation, selection, application, failure modes and testing of building construction sealants. They are able to interpret the results of sealant tests and recommend possible solutions to problems. We can undertake short-term consultancy and research projects, site visits and act as independent experts.
