I have been writing since I was a child but had got to the point where I felt I needed to really focus on my writing or it would get pushed out by other commitments. I felt it was now or never.

I was attracted to the course at Brookes because it offered the chance to work with such incredibly talented tutors and creative writing fellows. I also liked the modular structure, the weekly contact time and the fact that I could take the course part time so that I could fit it around work.

I love the fact that the course makes me prioritise my writing rather than just seeing it as a hobby. It’s also fantastic to be on campus once a week surrounded by people who are passionate about writing. I love sharing my work and supporting other students with theirs and have learnt that writing can be sociable rather than something you do in your lonely garret.

The course has taught me to write much more consciously than I did before; I now feel more aware of what I’m trying to achieve and more in control of my writing. Thanks to the diversity of the talents of the Creative Writing Fellows and tutors I have mastered techniques that I used to shy away from and feel that my writer’s tool kit is far more comprehensive now than it was before I started the course. I’ve learnt so much from Kate Clanchy about dialogue and internal dialogue. She and Patience Agbabi have made me want to write poems, something I never thought could happen! The sessions with Sarah Dunant are always fun and utterly inspiring and all the tutors are approachable and supportive and very generous with their advice.

I think all of us on the course hope one day to be published. The MA course increases our chances of achieving this, both through improving the quality of our writing and by giving us exposure to agents and publishers.

The course has proven to be such a fantastic opportunity to meet some incredibly talented writers who are really committed to helping us develop our work. I really feel that taking the MA has been one of the best decisions I ever made.
