OBAH is working with the University of Oxford, School of Archaeology on a project funded by the World Bank in Lesotho, southern Africa. The Metolong Dam Project is a multi-disciplinary venture which aims to preserve cultural (archaeology and rock art) material which will be inundated by rising river levels on the completion of a dam construction in the Metolong Valley. The University of Oxford asked researchers at OBAH to carry out geoarchaeological work at two archaeological cave sites (Ha Mokotoko and Ntloana Tsaona), as well as undertaking a survey of the wider area. This work will provide palaeoenvironmental data which will enhance our understanding of the wealth of archaeological material recovered from these important sites.
