BSc Hons Operating Department Practice course to be offered in Gibraltar
Wednesday, 25 April 2018
A delegation from Oxford Brookes University visited Gibraltar in March to explore the possibility of offering the BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice (ODP) course overseas
They met with representatives from the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA) and the School of Health Studies to discuss arrangements for this new partnership, enabling Gibraltar based students to enrol on the course from January 2019.
GHA staff are among those who are initially encouraged to apply for a place on the course, which will allow them to advance their clinical skills while contributing to their professional development. The degree provides students with an excellent opportunity to gain experience working alongside other healthcare professionals in the operating theatre environment, preparing them for the multidisciplinary nature of the role. Excellent communication, collaboration, and a high level of personal and professional responsibility are key skills for operating department practitioners. These expertise will be assessed during the application process and emphasised throughout the taught and practical elements of the course.
Upon completion of the degree, graduates will be able to go straight into practice and effectively contribute to providing high-quality care for patients undergoing surgery, subject to course accreditation approval from the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Dr Astrid Schloerscheidt, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, said:
“We are delighted to have the opportunity to collaborate with the Gibraltar Health Authority and the School of Health Studies on this project. The Faculty has been providing Operating Department Practice education for many years and we are widely recognised for the excellence of our provision in this area. The work with the GHA is an exciting opportunity to broaden our international work and to add to the growing portfolio of international partnerships in the University. ODP professionals are a vital part of modern health care provision and we are proud to contribute to the profession’s growing reputation.”
This is excellent news for healthcare education in Gibraltar, and a vital step in recognising the important contribution that operating department practitioners make while caring for patients across the healthcare sector.
