I came to Oxford Brookes because after browsing the History website I found that they had lecturers I would be interested in working with, and – between the Brookes library and the Bodleian at Oxford – unparalleled research resources in my subject.

I appreciated also the student-focused layout of the course, where I would have quite a lot of freedom to work on developing my own research interests. As an international student, I was also aware that the support system for overseas students is very strong. As an American student I could also see that the value for money of the UK master’s degree is extremely high.

My MA experience was terrific. I had enthusiastic and enlightened teachers, worked with helpful staff, and was lucky to have a fantastic supervisor for my dissertation. Together they made my degree experience challenging, interesting and very worthwhile. After earning a Distinction, and being asked to publish a portion of my dissertation, I decided it was also the right place to return for my doctorate. In terms of academic support and a friendly, collegial atmosphere Brookes surpasses my prior degrees by far.

Oxford Brookes has a more relaxed atmosphere than many high-pressure institutions, yet the quality of teaching is as good or better than other institutions I have attended, or considered attending. The History staff are not only talented, but cooperatively involved in their work. It's certainly the best place for my research work, and I sense a similar outlook from my fellow students.
