Navigating the law across jurisdictions: a diplomat's experience with guest speaker Ambassador Eddie Turay

A barrister by profession, Mr Turay studied in England and was called to the bar by Lincoln&aphos;s Inn in 1976. He then practised in Jamaica before returning home to Sierra Leone in 1979, serving as a magistrate for three years. Mr Turay then went into politics in 1982 and won a seat in 1986 as a member of parliament for Bombali central one constituency.

He held the seat up to January 2010, during this period Mr Turay served as the Secretary General of the ruling APC party and then Minority Leader of the House of Parliament from 1996 to 2002. This was after he contested for the Presidency in 1996 and lost. In 2007 he was appointed Leader of the Majority party in the Parliament and Leader of Government Business, until January 2010 when he was appointed Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and accredited to eight other states – namely Cyprus, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Greece.
He has served in almost all Parliamentary Committees either as chairman or a member and was the chairman for the Judicial Committee for over ten years. He is the Founder and Consultant of Eddie Turay & Associates, a leading Law Firm in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
