The Magical Tradition of the Household Dragon

Who this event is for

  • Everyone

Chakrabarti (208), John Henry Brookes Building, Headington Campus, Gipsy Lane site

Understand why many people, across Central and Eastern Europe between the 16th and 19th centuries, believed in flying, fiery household dragons that lived like pets in farmhouses and brought money or food to their owners. Many people claimed to have seen dragons flying over their villages and these sightings played a role in Central European witch-hunts. Compare these household dragons with the monstrous dragons from medieval literature.

Join Professor Johannes Dillinger to learn more about this fascinating aspect of the history of magic.
