Brookes Japanese Lecturer to feature on BBC Radio 4’s landmark film programme

Thursday, 27 February 2014

Dr Alexander Jacoby, Senior Lecturer in Japanese Studies, will be speaking on the Film Programme on BBC Radio 4 alongside Sir Christopher Frayling (former Rector of the Royal College of Arts and now Distinguished Professor at Lancaster), about the Japanese remake of Clint Eastwood's great revisionist Western, Unforgiven (1992). The remake stars Ken Watanabe in the Eastwood role and is directed by Lee Sang-Il (a Korean resident of Japan), and transposes the story from the Wild West to Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido in the late nineteenth-century. Dr Jacoby will discuss the way in which the story is subtly reworked to locate it in its new Japanese setting, its historical context (Hokkaido as pioneer territory), and its possible appeal to Western audiences. The Film Programme is broadcast Thursday 28 February at 4pm and repeated on Sunday 2 March at 11pm, and available to Listen Again on iPlayer after that.
