Client Interviewing training day

Two students from Oxford Brookes’ School of Law won the Regional Heat of the Client Interviewing Competition of England and Wales on Friday 10 February.

Graduate Diploma in Law students, Elly Warner-Kennedy and Rachel Collis, performed exceptionally well throughout the heat which was hosted by Oxford Brookes University. The pair will now represent Oxford Brookes in the National Final at the Exeter offices of Ashfords Solicitors on Saturday 11 March.

Client Interviewing competitions involve working as a pair to interview and advise a “client” (a role-playing actor) whilst being observed and judged on criteria like interpersonal skills and the ability to handle a legal problem. It is an important skill for all trainee lawyers to develop, as it teaches you to establish a relationship with a client, communicate with them and advise based on the nature of the legal problem they discern.

Oxford Brookes University also hosted the third annual Client Interviewing Competition National Training Day in January. Those leading the event included Marc Howe of the School of Law, who is one of the competition's National Training Directors, and students from the School of Law took the client roles in the practice interviews.

All of the teams which were participating in this year's Client Interviewing Competition were invited to the event, and student teams from across England and Wales were able to take part in demonstrations, panel discussions and client interviewing workshops.  This provides a fantastic opportunity to practise client interviews in front of experienced judges, faculty coaches and previous competitors.

Principal lecturer Marc Howe commented "The School of Law was delighted to be able to host the Client Interviewing Competition National Training Day again this year, and we wish Elly and Rachel the very best of luck in the National Final in Exeter."
