Careers Talks for Law Students

Tuesday, 23 October 2012

The Oxford Brookes School of Law (incorporating OXILP) have been organising a series of talks for current students aimed at giving them a better understanding of the market for graduate positions and how best to maximise their appeal to employers. On Monday 8th October Dick Lidwell gave a careers talk to Law Students. Mr Lidwell was until recently the head of the careers service at Oxford University and shared his wealth of experience in the sector. Mr Lidwell focused on emerging trends in the market place and gave tips on applications. On Monday 15th October RPC held a talk using their experience of being a leading firm to allow students to better understand issues regarding market trends and recruitment from an employers perspective. RPC describe themselves as "a modern, progressive and commerically-orientated city legal services business providing advice to both UK and international clients". On Monday 22nd October David Miles, a consultant from Blake Lapthorn Solicitors and an accomplished CEDR mediator, came to speak to students about Mediation and its significance in UK litigation. He then conducted a role-play mediation involving 4 of our LPC students, the two sides then tried to resolve the dispute through David's mediation process. Attendance for  these events was very high and this is set to continue for the remaining talks. Feedback  has been extremely good and these talks help students decide on which area they wish to specialise in and how best to apply for positions within that area. Watch this space for further details of recent events.
