Monday, 18 March 2013

The musical, which is based on Giacomo Puccini's opera La Bohème. tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side in the thriving days of the Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.The show, which was produced by the Fortune Players, featured the talents of English and Drama students Steph Jones, Andy Wickens, Steph James, Phoebe Hitt, and Lauren Ritchie, with front of house support by Joe Partington, and was directed by Carly Bond. Carly, who joined the Fortune Players in 2011, says that she chose RENT as the 2013 musical because she felt 'the inspiring score and poignant storyline would complement the outstanding talent of Brookes' English and Drama students as well as the musicians at Brookes, who collaborated to bring this piece of theatre to life. From the beginning of our rehearsal process, the challenges were ever present, with demanding vocals and intense scenes throughout. However, the dedication and commitment of the cast and creative team has shone through, and I couldn’t be prouder!'
