Essay by Mikko Kuisma published by Policy Network

Wednesday, 30 March 2011

Policy Network, a leading international progressive politics thinktank, has published an essay by Dr Mikko Kuisma, Senior Lecturer in International Relations at Oxford Brookes. In the piece entitled Re-politicising Nordic Social Democracy, Mikko argues that, due to poor strategy and the crisis of Nordic institutions, Nordic social democrats need to turn back to prioritising politics over economics and take a leap of faith into the world of ideas and values. An open debate on values is the only way for social democrats to regain power, and for all mainstream parties to fight against the increasingly popular populist right-wing parties. The essay arises from fieldwork material collected during Mikko's ESRC-funded research project on Welfare State Practices and the Constitution of the Citizen: Nordic Models of Capitalism in an Age of Globalisation (grant reference RES-000-22-3298). The essay can be found in its entirety from the Policy Network website at: http://www.policy-network.net/articles/3983/Re-politicising-Nordic-social-democracy
