Oxford Brookes Alumni to publish young adult novels with Usborne

Linni Ingemundsen, Oxford Brookes MA Creative Writing alumna, is set to have her first book published by Usborne Publishing. This will be the first novel in a two-book deal with Usborne’s young adult section.

After her graduation in 2015, Linni obtained representation from Antony Harwood literary agency. This was as a result of a booklet created annually from each MA Creative Writing cohort, made up of excerpts of graduating students work and sent out to a number of literary agencies. Once her manuscript was complete, her agency sent it on to several publishers before deciding on a deal with Usborne.

Linni’s book is a young adult novel set in a fictional Norwegian town and follows the story of Malin, a quirky thirteen year-old, and deals with themes of friendship, adolescence and growing up.

Linni credits the Creative Writing MA at Brookes with ensuring that “you are constantly challenged to write on the spot and get direct feedback from your lecturer and peers. Even though this shot me into panic mode every time, it was so helpful and I learned a lot. Throughout the year the feedback helped me develop as a writer, but maybe more importantly it made me believe more in myself and trust my own writing more. The fact that the lecturers believe in you and want to help you make your writing the best it can be really made this course worth it for me.”

Dr James Hawes, reader in Creative Writing for the MA, was one of the first to hear Linni’s work: "When Linni read out the first page of her proposed tale on day one of the MA, everyone was immediately charmed. I'm absolutely delighted that she feels we were able to encourage and help her bring it to fruition. It's why we do this!"
