Thursday, 12 May 2011

The Spring/Summer 2011 issue of Past and Future, the Institute for Historical Research's magazine, is out now. It features a short piece by History research student George Campbell Gosling, reflecting on the introduction of seminar podcasting, and is available online at: http://www.history.ac.uk/publications/magazine For the past two years George has been seminar convenor for the Voluntary Action History Society, and in that time he introduced the podcasting of the seminar series. This began in September 2009 with a paper by another Brookes research student, Lynsey Cullen, on the first hospital social worker in late nineteenth-century London. Podcasted seminars since have included those on topics relating to the voluntary sector and the Boer War and the Cold War, motherhood in colonial Sydney, consumerism in healthcare, the myth of the 1950s housewife and the formation of the British gay community. These are all available to listen to at: http://www.history.ac.uk/podcasts/voluntary-action-history-seminars If you are interested in giving a VAHS seminar at the IHR, please contact the new convenor, Marian Flint, at m-flint@tiscali.co.uk
