Principal Lecturer appointed to the Higher Education Academy

Wednesday, 23 November 2011

Dr Helen Walkington, Principal Lecturer in Geography, has been selected for a prestigious secondment as Discipline Lead for Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences for the Higher Education Academy, which provides national leadership on best practice in HE teaching. One of three academics selected from Oxford Brookes University - an unusually high number of appointments from one HE institution – Helen Walkington is joined by Lynn Bibbings, Discipline Lead on Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism; and Dr Mary McAlinden, Discipline Lead on Maths, Stats and Operational Research. The appointments recognise the three as national leaders for learning and teaching in their disciplines. In their new roles, they will work with individual academic staff, departments, discipline groups and senior managers in HE institutions to encourage pedagogic research and innovative practice, and to identify and share evidence-based effective teaching practices. The aim is to provide the best possible learning experience for students and also to recognise and reward excellence in staff. They will also maintain their own practice and research by continuing to work part of their time at Brookes. Helen Walkington comments: 'For me the appointment is a chance to work at a UK-wide level, to bring ideas into Brookes and also to share best practice from Brookes more widely across the UK.' The HE Academy is an independent organisation funded by grants from the four UK Higher Education funding bodies, subscriptions from Higher Education institutions, and grant and contract income for specific initiatives.
