Professor Miller selected for inaugural BBC Female Expert Day Wednesday, 23 January 2013 An Oxford Brookes academic was selected to join a new BBC initiative to boost the number of female experts represented in the media which took place last week (Friday 18 January). Professor Tina Miller, Professor of Sociology at Oxford Brookes, was one of just 30 experts selected from over two thousand applicants to take part in the first Female Expert Day. The BBC Academy initiative arises in response to claims that female experts could not be found to contribute to discussions on a range of academic topics on radio and TV programmes. The day provided an opportunity for the shortlisted experts to meet leading industry professionals and programme commissioners and receive hands-on training. Professor Miller commented: “The day was a truly unique experience in enabling women from areas of business, science, history, politics and a single sociologist - me - to learn from industry experts about how to translate our expertise into media content. “I and the other 29 experts selected from over 2000 applicants for this pilot spent the day being filmed and critiqued, making a radio programme and meeting TV and Radio commissioning editors, programme makers, current expert presenters and industry production technicians. “Following the day our details and recordings are to be made available to the industry and a follow-up day is also planned.” One aspect of the selection process involved presenting ideas, via a short recording, for a TV programme. Professor Miller presented ideas for a programme based on her on-going research which focuses on social change, gender and the organisation of caring in family lives. In particular her research explores the implications of the feminization of the workplace and shifts in women’s lives, for men’s lives and practices: what she calls the masculinisation of the home sphere. These changes have yet to be explored in any thought-provoking ways in mainstream media. Watch the video on this page for more information. The Female Expert Day gave Professor Miller the opportunity to discuss her work with industry leads and she has already received industry interest in using her expertise and turning her research findings into media outputs. More information on Professor Miller’s work can be found on the project website. Further information from Anne Morrison, Director of the BBC Academy is available to read online and the initiative will be featured on Radio 4’s Feedback programme on Friday 25 January.
