Reader in History, Dr Joanne Bailey, talks about marriage, surnames and identity on BBC Radio Leeds

Wednesday, 24 July 2013

Oxford Brookes’ historian, Dr Joanne Bailey, has been interviewed on the Mark Forrest programme on BBC Radio Leeds for her view on why women adopt their husbands’ surname at marriage. This follows a recent Facebook survey in the US and the UK which identified that more women in their twenties retain their maiden name, with older women taking their husbands’ surname.
