US Congress-to-Campus programme visits Oxford Brookes

Monday, 14 February 2011

On 8th February 2011 Oxford Brookes' Department of International Relations, Politics and Sociology hosted a visit from the Congress-to-Campus programme organised by the United States Congess and the Eccles Centre for American Studies at the British Library. The annual programme involves two ex-members of the House of Representatives visiting a number of HE institutions in the UK and other countries to talk to staff and students about US government and politics. This year we were fortunate to welcome Bart Gordon (Democrat), a distinguished ex-Representative from Tennessee, and Steven Kuykendall (Republican), who has not only served in the House, but is currently seeking re-election to a California District. Some 60 faculty, postgraduate and undergraduate students met with our guests in a lively and wide-ranging discussion around the theme of Divided government and the future of the Obama presidency. The session was jointly chaired by Professor Barrie Axford, Head of the Department of IR, Politics and Sociology at Brookes, and Professor Philip Davies of the Eccles Centre.
