Witchcraft and Magic in C19th & Early C20th Fiction

Tuesday, 25 October 2011

Dr Simon White is leading a major collaborative British Academy funded project exploring the relationship between reported incidents of witchcraft and fictional narratives, and the manner in which the representation of witchcraft and magic contributes to the construction of regional identity in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century fiction. Simon and his co-investigator, Professor Owen Davies of the University of Hertforshire, are looking at witchraft and magic in Cornwall, Devon, Essex, Lancashire, Lincolnshire, Somerset, the Scottish borders and Shropshire. They are currently writing journal articles on Walter Raymond and Mary Webb. The major outcome of the project will be a co-authored monograph.
