Report from the Olomouc Proteomic Training School
Tuesday, 03 September 2019
Proteomics is the large-scale study of the structure and function of proteins in complex biological sample. Current proteomic tools allow high-throughput analyses for the detection, identification, characterization of proteins and its posttranslational modifications.
Report from Claire Jourdain who works in the Schubert lab at the Freie University in Berlin.
Under the INDEPTH organization, a quite rigorous and very interesting week young researchers and more experienced researchers have spent at Palacký University Olomouc, in the Centre of the Region Haná for Biotechnological and Agricultural Research (Czech Republic) to participate in a summer training program on Plant Nuclear Proteomics (July 9th-12th).
The intensive course was designed to give the doctoral students and researchers a working knowledge of the methods and concepts of isolating plant nuclei, removing DNA, nuclear protein recovery and peptide-based protein identification using tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), and to provide the opportunity to understand and resolve the MS/MS data processing and analysis.
The modules of the week included lectures and laboratory experiments, led by instructors and scientists from Palacký University Olomouc. The interesting thing in these modules was covering the variability of proteomics approaches depending on the aim of the analysis. In fact, different proteomic methods have been shown, according to the biological question and sample preparation.
This summer course helped us to gain experience in a new area, we learnt new techniques that will help in our research. Special mention goes to the scientists from Palacký University Olomouc and the COST_INDEPTH, for giving us the opportunity to participate in this amazing summer course. It was a great event for all of us! We met a lot of awesome international plant scientists and it was a good opportunity for potential new collaborations.
We also had some free time for visiting the beautiful city and taste good dishes, cheeses and beers from Czech Republic!
Thanks to everybody for the stimulating discussions and for all the fun we had during the week.
