Hammed Al-Grou - Yemen, Pre-Master's course

Why did you decide to study in the UK?
I decided to study in the UK because of the quality of education. It’s recognised world wide that British qualifications are the best.

Why did you decide to study at Oxford Brookes?
I decided to study at Oxford Brookes because of the range of courses they offer. It’s truly international and the service they provide to an international student is incredible. Staff support them all the way through.

Why did you choose to study this course?
I thought at the time it would prepare me for the master's and introduce me to the British system. I was not disappointed. It’s really good. The material we’re taught is a great help in preparing me because it replicates the master's in every sense of the word. We’re doing project work, reading skills and things like that. Skills that we need for the master's.

Describe the best thing about the course, what would that be?
The best thing is the teaching style and of course the teachers. You’ve got group teaching as well as individual support. I also like the fact that our skills are developed, so we get help, but we do lots of work to gain transferable skills that will stay with us for ever.

Have the teaching and other staff supported you to settle in? Have they given you any help?
They have indeed. They’ve helped me in choosing the topic I’d be writing, directing me to find sources and giving constructive feedback all the way through. Without them, we would not be able to progress at all.

What do you like most about living in Oxford?
I think the history and the character. It’s a very famous city and it inspires you, every building inspires you in Oxford, wherever you go. It’s also full of highly educated and cultured people. It’s a really nice place.

Would you recommend this course to other students?
I would strongly recommend this course to other students as I think it’s the gateway to doing a master's and to doing postgraduate study in Britain. I think it takes more than good spoken English and this course provides you with the fundamental skills you need. The writing skills, reading and research skills are really beneficial and I didn’t have a chance to learn this in my degree. It introduces you to the systems, to University life and it builds your confidence.
