Library services for Students

  • All Brookes students are welcome to use our 4 libraries Headington, Harcourt Hill, Swindon and Wheatley, with full access to both print and online resources.

The Library staff are here to help you. For lending and library account queries please come to the Library Welcome Desk/Counters.
For help with using the Library web pages, the Library catalogue, Discover, databases and how to find good resources, please ask at the Library Help Zone/Enquiry Desk.

Our Library Regulations apply to all users.

  • The Library homepage is the starting point for a wealth of information about the Library and its services. To find resources, choose a search tab from the grey Search box below.

    • LibrarySearch offers a general 'Google' type search for books, e-books, DVDs and also includes some journal articles
    • Books and e-books is the tab for the Library QuickSearch and offers a very easy way to find all resources within the Library
    • Journal titles is the best tab when you already know the name of the journal you wish to find
    • Find a database is the gateway to finding journal articles on a subject

For specialist help about your subject go to Subject Help.

    Borrowing

You may borrow up to 20 books or other items, using your student card on self-issue machines. In addition you may also borrow five books from the Short Loan Collection. There are longer loan periods during vacation.  Students who are disabled, have dyslexia or an SpLD have slightly extended loan lengths and limits, see this page for more information.

    Renewing

Most items will be automatically renewed on the date they are due to be returned.  Loans that have been reserved by someone else will not be automatically renewed and must be returned.

In addition, books and other items may be renewed by any of the following methods:

    • Log into My Account
    • Use the self-issue machines
    • Show your student card at the Library Welcome Desk/Counters and ask for your loans to be renewed

Most items may be renewed up to 25 times before they have to be returned to the library, unless they have been reserved. Harcourt Hill 6 week loan classroom resources will only be renewed automatically for up to 6 months.

    Returning

    • Items can be returned using the self-service machines in the libraries at Harcourt Hill and Wheatley. The Headington Library has two automatic return slots next to the Welcome Desk on Level 1
    • You do not have to return an item to the library from which it was borrowed
    • When the libraries are closed you may return items to the external book boxes at Harcourt Hill and Wheatley or to the automatic return slots at Headington
    • You do not need your student card in order to return an item
    • Fines are payable on items returned late
    • You can check the date an item is due for return via My Account
    • The fine for all overdue items, except for those from the Short Loan Collection, is £1 per day
    • The fine for items from the Short Loan Collection is £1 per hour
    • These fines are charged on all days when the Library is open

    Borrowing with fines

    • Fines of more than £15 will prevent borrowing until they are paid in full
    • An invoice will be raised for any large fine. This will include an additional £10 administration charge
    • If you have a large fine please come and discuss options for payment with us
    • All outstanding fines must be paid off before you finish your course

    Lost Items

    • If you think you may have lost a book or other item, then please contact us as soon as possible
    • You will be charged for the cost of replacing the book (replacement charge for most items is £35) plus a £10 administration charge. As an alternative you may supply a replacement copy. This must be the same edition or a newer edition of the lost item
    • Please note that if you replace an item and then find the lost copy, a refund will not be given
If an item that you need is already on loan to someone else or is at another site, you may place a hold on it. When it is available we will keep it for you to collect within 7 days.
The quickest way to obtain material that is not on loan from your home site is to collect it yourself from the library shelves.
Further details about holds can be found here.

Some items that are in high demand are held in the Short Loan collection.
If a book or journal is not available at Brookes, you can request it from another library through the Interlibrary loans service.
