Training sessions for Law

    A number of law training sessions are organised by the library over the academic year, and more information about each session is below. Additional training takes place in many law modules - your module handbook will provide information about when and where this is taking place


  • Do you need help in finding useful materials on Westlaw and LexisLibrary? Are you finding too many results? Or too few? Or are your results not relevant? Then this training is for you! Book your place

     

    This training is suitable for LLB and GDL students at any stage in your course. It is also suitable for undergraduate students taking a law module as part of their course.

     

    Topics covered include:

    • Locating and accessing items on your reading list
    • Basic searching: Choosing and combining search words and keywords 
    • Discovering related materials e.g. articles about a case, or cases related to a section of an Act

    Each session lasts an hour and will include practical exercises.

     

    Places are limited and booking in advance is essential. Book your place.

     

    If you cannot attend a workshop, there's plenty of information on the library website about both LexisLibrary and Westlaw.

    • Staying up-to-date with the law
    • Advanced searching: truncation, proximity searching and wildcards

    If you want to come to the Advanced session without attending a Getting Started session first, please look at the description of the Getting Started course and ensure you are confident with those skills as the Advanced session will build on them

    This hour-long workshop is ideal for:

    • LLB students - in any year
    • GDL students
    • Any other undergraduate student taking a law module that uses OSCOLA referencing

    It will cover:

    • The difference between footnotes and bibliographies
    • How to reference books
    • How to reference journal articles
    • How to reference English case law
    • Troubleshooting and common OSCOLA mistakes
    • Useful resources to help with OSCOLA

    There will be an opportunity in the workshop to practise your OSCOLA referencing and receive feedback.
