Zumbathon1

3rd year midwifery student Tori Fleet talks us through a recent Oxford Brookes University Maternal and Women's Public Health (OxBUMP) event: the Zumba4Bump group’s Zumbathon!

Great fun! It was fantastic to see some of the mums I had met previously at Zumba4bump and to meet their babies.

Clare Huggard, mum and zumba enthusiast

The annual Zumbathon was held last weekend (Saturday 28 April) in Eynsham Village Hall. Members of all ages from the surrounding communities came together to boogie away their saturday afternoon. George, Nicky and Julie donated their time to lead the two-hour Zumba session. Babies, mums and midwives alike all joined in to highlight the benefit of exercise during pregnancy and the postnatal period. The wonderful group spirit highlighted the importance of the Zumba4BUMP project and its place within our community.

A selection of stalls, including a raffle and cake stand, were supplied from very generous donations and were perfect for a mid-Zumba refuel. The Oxford Brookes Midwifery Society were offering fun games and information to the families who attended, in conjunction with a celebration for the International Day of the Midwife (May 5th). It was a great opportunity for the students involved to champion our work as midwives, promote the community projects such as Zumba4BUMP, and educate the community on the expansive role of a midwife.

A great £580 was raised, which will go towards the continuation of the Zumba4BUMP sessions, held every saturday morning from 10am to 11:30am at Witney Methodist Church Hall. The Zumba sessions offer exercise, a great way to bond with your baby and a chance to partake in a weekly discussion topic. The money raised was vital to the continuation of this project and we are so thankful for everyone who came along to support us!

Clare Huggard, one of the mums who attended the event, also gave a glowing report, saying: “The Zumbathon was great fun! It was fantastic to see some of the mums I had met previously at Zumba4bump and to meet their babies. My daughter loved the music and dancing with mummy in the sling!”
