Dr Mary Deane

  • Senior Lecturer in Educational Development

Dr. Deane specialises in early career academic development, teaching writing at university, and supporting colleagues to obtain professional recognition as academic teachers.  She works closely with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Studies at Oxford Brookes to support programme teams and help colleagues keep connected with cutting-edge higher education pedagogies across the sector.

Mary’s research specialism is writing development, and she is currently writing about the writing challenges faced by non-native speakers of English at UK universities.  Her other current projects include research into narrative pedagogies in HE as part of the ‘Writing out of the Box’ project which investigates the potential of story-telling to promote academic teachers’ reflective practice.  Mary enjoys supervising researchers, and welcomes inquiries about doctoral work in the fields of academic writing and educational development.  Her publications include:

    • Learning and Teaching Writing Online (2015)
    • Writing in the Disciplines (2011)
    • Academic Research, Writing, and Referencing (2010)
    • Critical Thinking and Analysis (2010)
