The widening of participation in UK higher education has increased the pressure on institutions to find ways of increasing the chances of their students' success. Traditional indicators of institutional success include retention and completion rates. However, to tackle 'the retention problem' risks mistaking symptom for cause, and the needs of the institution for those of the student.
This presentation will focus on some theoretical and empirical resources that may help the student experience to be made optimally effective (which, with the various pressures on higher education systems around the world, is acknowledged as being no easy task).
