  • Oxford Centre for Staff and Learning Development (OCSLD) will be running another ILM Coaching and Mentoring Level 5 Certificate Programme in 2019.  This highly successful programme is open to external participants as well as Brookes participants.  We will be offering up to 6 places to Brookes staff.  For candidates who are looking for an opportunity to join a group of like-minded people to gain a highly sought after practical coaching qualification.

To apply for the course, please register your interest here.

The programme equips managers with the key skills for developmental coaching in the workplace.  Coaching enables people to learn by facilitating thinking and to enhance their performance through powerful conversations.

The course content teaches the essential skills for developmental coaching conversations and the benefits of coaching to individuals and organisations. The purpose of coaching is to enable people to learn without teaching by facilitating their thinking. A variety of models are covered, along with an understanding of how individual thoughts, feelings and behaviours are learnt and changed, and how these factors affect the coaching conversation for both the coach and the coachee.

Once you have completed the course, you will receive a  Level 5 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring.

  • The qualification consists of 3 units. In brief they consist of:

    • Understanding the Skills, Principles and Practice of Effective Management Coaching and Mentoring
    • Undertaking management coaching or mentoring in the workplace. (Each participant needs to carry out 12 hours of coaching during the course.)
    • Reviewing own ability as a management coach
    • Workshops
    • Coaching supervision and one-to-one tutorials
    • Coaching practice sets
    • Self-directed learning

    • "Having worked as an elite sports coach for the past 15 years I felt I needed to add to my knowledge and skills as a coach and work towards being able to mentor new coaches and colleagues effectively.  The ILM level 5 course at Oxford Brookes has been a fantastic opportunity to learn and practice new techniques under creative and supportive tutors amongst a diverse range of people.  It has opened my eyes to current thinking and models in the coaching and mentoring arena which I am already using within my coaching and mentoring practice." Sue Rose, Sports Consultant, Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist
    • "I have found the ILM Coaching and Mentoring Level 5 Certificate Programme, delivered by Oxford Brookes university to be excellent. The programme is well structured with a good mix of practical workshops, supported with relevant theory. The tutors are always well prepared, professional and support our emerging coaching practice with both sensitivity and rigor. I particularly appreciate the supportive learning atmosphere created within the group which enabled us to practise and develop our coaching together. Our individual coaching and mentoring skills are further developed and supported by excellent coaching supervision. The assignments are relevant, clearly explained and although demanding they do provide useful opportunity for further reflection and understanding of coaching and mentoring in practice."  Nadine Hill, Professional Development Manager, Primary Learning Services
    • "A thought provoking course that has given me tools to lead my team.  Having managed large teams for a number of years you tend to use your preferred tried and tested methods and continue to manage as you have always.  Coaching is changing that for me.  There is no feeling to beat the feeling you get when you come out of a coaching session, if we could bottle it, we would make millions!"  Catherine Fleming, General Catering Services Manager, Oxford Brookes University
    • "I attended this course as preparation for taking on a coaching role in my own organisation, the Oxford Learning Institute (part of Oxford University). It's run by a lovely team of developers, who handled a good range of theories and models and a large amount of practical material with great effectiveness. Workshops were always well-designed, lively, useful and enlightening, and good support and supervision were provided for the assignments and practical coaching work. I feel well prepared to start my coaching career and very grateful to the Brookes team for such an outstanding course."   Clare Wakeham, Professional Development Adviser, University of Oxford
    • "I have joined the ILM Coaching and Mentoring Level 5 Certificate Programme to develop my "manager as coach" skills and build a customer-focused and empowered team. The programme has completely exceeded my expectations - I have not only learnt effective coaching tools to manage the team but I have also gained a life skill of self-reflection resulting in better relationships at work and in private life. I would recommend the programme to anyone with managerial responsibilities; it is worth the effort!"   Monika Graham, Site Manager, Oxford Brookes University
    • "The ILM Level 5 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring has transformed the way I work. It has developed my communication skills and made me reflect more on my interactions with people, not just at work but also beyond. The tutors are an incredible team who work with professionalism, integrity and humour. The course is well organised and supported. I would highly recommend the course to anyone wanting to develop their coaching or mentoring skills. I look forward to ongoing participation in a community of qualified coaches."   Dr Helen Walkington, Principal Lecturer in Geography, Oxford Brookes University
    • "I thoroughly enjoyed the coaching and Mentoring Level 5 course, it gives you the chance to explore different theories and techniques, as well as gain practical coaching experience. Studying with a diverse group of people from varying backgrounds allowed for inspirational sharing of ideas. So far I have found the coaching sessions interesting and challenging and my coachees have found them very useful. Thank you Oxford Brookes for the opportunity to undertake this course."   Hayley Card, Student Disputes Officer, Oxford Brookes University.
    • “The focus has been on a combination of learning about coaching models and practicalities of a coaching relationship, and also on opportunities to practise being coaches. This has been really valuable as we’ve learnt a lot about different approaches to coaching as well as trying out our skills and learning through practice. One of our assignments involves 12 hours of coaching ‘real’ clients, and it’s been great to practise with the other course members before we go out with proper clients.”   Staff member, Oxford Brookes University
    • "Well run, supportive and collegial group as a whole."  Staff member, Oxford Brookes University
    • "I think the combination of theory and practice provides a very solid basis on which to build coaching experience."   Staff member, Oxford Brookes University
    • "Has made me approach things differently and has hopefully improved my managerial skills in being less dictatorial in allowing others to find their own solutions and take ownership over their own areas. Thus creating an enhanced working environment and culture of trust."  Staff member, Oxford Brookes University
    • "Practical, hands-on course with also an excellent coverage of coaching theory, very applicable to someone wishing to be a coach within their workplace."   Staff member, Oxford Brookes University

We will be holding interviews for places on the programme on:

    • Tuesday 16 October
    • Wednesday 7 November
    • Wednesday 5 and Wednesday 19 December 2018 and
    • Wednesday 16 January 2019.

We need some volunteers who would be interested in being coached by our current group of staff working towards this qualification.

This is an opportunity to experience coaching, which is a conversation in which coach helps you to think about issues or problems which you would like to progress with.
