Introduction to learning and teaching in higher education

  • Who is it for

    PhD research students and others who may not be currently engaged in formal teaching duties, but who will be taking on duties such as leading seminar groups, taking laboratory sessions and/or delivering the occasional lecture.

    The format of the course.

    The course runs over two half days, usually a week apart:

    • The first half day introduces the fundamentals of student learning and perspectives on university teaching.
    • In the second half day you will deliver a ‘microteaching’ session. You will receive peer and tutor feedback on your own teaching, experience a variety of teaching styles, and practice giving feedback to others.


    To support you in your work with students by gaining an understanding of learning and teaching in HE.  

    Learning outcomes

    By the end of the session you will be able to:

    • Describe the key features of learning and teaching environment in Higher Education
    • Apply effective teaching techniques to support student to learn effectively.


    The course is not credit-bearing, but we will award you a certificate of attendance if you successfully complete both parts of the course.
