About Discover Brookes

Are you in your first year of sixth form or college outside of Oxfordshire? Do you want to find out more about university life, and get a taste of what studying at Oxford Brookes University is like? Discover Brookes is a two year access programme designed to support progression to university for students from groups which are currently under-represented in Higher Education (see eligibility criteria below for more details).

Benefits of the programme

  • Explore a subject area that interests you: Virtual subject workshops will give you the chance to learn more about studying your chosen subject at Oxford Brookes University and get to know new people with similar interests to you from across the country, including current students.
  • Take part from anywhere in England: Much of the programme, including all of the subject workshops, mentoring, personal statement and interview support sessions will take place online so you can access them from anywhere! There will also be content you can access in your own time and at your own pace.
  • Experience the campus: You’ll also receive a guaranteed place on the Oxford Brookes Summer School in July 2022 where you can experience life as a university student, staying in student accommodation. You’ll also receive a special invite to the Open Day and Applicant Days.
  • Chat to current university students: A friendly team of current university students will work with you via 1:1 mentoring and provide subject support during the virtual workshops. You can hear first hand from them what it’s like to be a student at Oxford Brookes University and study for a degree in your area of interest.
  • Strengthen your UCAS application: If you decide to apply to university, Discover Brookes will be a great thing to write about in your personal statement, as it shows your commitment to learn more beyond sixth form or college. As part of the programme you’ll receive support in completing your UCAS application.
  • A contextual offer to study at Oxford Brookes: Successful completion of the programme will give you access to a contextual offer to study at Oxford Brookes. This means we’ll offer you a place on reduced tariff points as long as any other conditions of the offer are met. This is usually around two grades lower, but can vary per course.
  • Gain £1K scholarship: Lastly, if you successfully complete the programme, you’ll also be entitled to a £1000 scholarship in your first year of study at Oxford Brookes.

Discover Brookes is a free sustained access programme, open to young people across England who are in their first year of a Level 3 qualification (e.g. A Levels, BTEC, or equivalent), and from backgrounds currently under-represented in higher education. Applications are open now, and the deadline for applying is Thursday 25th November 2021.

The programme will run from December 2021 to August 2023, and is designed to support your students to make a successful transition to university by broadening their knowledge in a subject area of interest, and helping them to develop skills and attributes that will be beneficial to further study and in the world of work. All subject workshops will run virtually, allowing participants from across the country to take part with ease, with opportunities for students to visit campus at various points throughout the programme. Participants will take part in a range of activities over the course of the programme, including subject workshops, a summer school in July 2022, and online support, including 1:1 mentoring with a current university student.

By the end of the programme, participants should feel confident about making decisions for their next step in their educational and career journey. Students who successfully complete the programme will also be rewarded with a contextual offer (an offer with lower grade requirements than would usually be made), and a £1,000 scholarship in their first year of study if they decide to apply for a full-time course at Oxford Brookes.

The programme is completely free of charge to participants; this will include students’ travel to campus, catering, and accommodation for overnight stays where opportunities to visit campus are provided.

  • Provide students with access to high-quality enrichment activities.
  • Increase students’ awareness of the opportunities of higher education, and their sense of belonging within a university.
  • Increase students’ confidence and resilience to support their successful transition to higher education.
  • Expand students’ subject knowledge to new contexts, and increase their capacity for higher level study skills.
  • Create a peer group of like-minded students, and allow them to gain an insight into student life through the experiences of current Oxford Brookes undergraduates.
  • Showcase the links between university courses and employability.
