Research
My research focuses mainly on current issues of Family Law. My interest in these matters arose from my practice as a Family Lawyer in Portugal, as well as from my genuine interest in the issues related to families and the regulations of their lives. It was then a natural choice for me to develop my PhD project on the issue of the Imbalance of Powers in Family Mediation.
I aim to continue to develop research in the area of family law, focusing on divorce and children issues. I intend to develop further research, linked to my PhD project, exploring ways to raise the mediators’ and even the family judges’ awareness of the issues of imbalance, focusing on ways to address the variety and volatile characteristics of issues of imbalance and the difficulties to address those issues.
I am committed to remaining open to new ideas, new projects, and new collaborations either within the area of family law or within a different subject that will appear relevant at the time. In line with the above, I am also interested in exploring new lines of research that can be studied across different disciplines, hence opening the door to the development of interdisciplinary projects.

Research impact
The world of family law is an area of law where further work and research are needed as documented by the worrying article by Camilla Cavendish in the Financial Times on the 21st of October 2023. It is clear that much more work needs to be done to protect those who are vulnerable, and more work is needed to raise the awareness of the courts, and of society in general, to the seriousness of family issues and their immense impact on the future of the children as well as close and extended relatives.
