Amber Scarborough

MA English Literature, 2016

“This has been such a phenomenal experience. The lecturers and everyone else have been so nice and helpful. I feel so lucky that I was able to do this!”

Amber received her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and then chose to study for her MA English Literature in England, at Oxford Brookes.

I took my undergraduate degree in Creative Writing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I chose Oxford Brookes University to continue my studies as it was advertised as having an excellent English program with a variety of courses and Oxford was a city I’d dreamed of visiting.

Now that I’m about to graduate, I feel like I’ve had the most intense year of work – but it has been so rewarding. I have broadened my mind with literature and different works, created a good work ethic, and I have gained important analytical skills.

The other students on my course were kind and helpful, as were my lecturers. Professor Simon Kövesi, Dr Eric White and Prof Dan Lea were amazing in being there for me when I needed support. They always responded to my e-mails and were always willing to meet when I asked so that I could voice my opinion or ask them a question. Their passion for what they do was amazing to see and there was never a dull moment in seminars because of how excited they were to discuss the material. They have inspired me to continue on and do a PhD and hopefully become a professor.

I enjoy being in Oxford, and being able to use the Bodleian Library has been incredible for my course. I love how easy it is to get somewhere because the public transport is amazing. It is a culturally diverse city and has a fantastic history; everywhere I go there is a building or a monument that dates back hundreds of years. There’s always something to see or do!

As an international student I would say studying at Brookes is an amazing opportunity! You’ll need to keep an open mind and talk to as many people as possible. If I could, I would definitely do this all over again! Being able to travel and experience a new culture and country is what everyone should do if they get the chance.

This has been such a phenomenal experience. The lecturers and everyone else have been so nice and helpful. I feel so lucky that I was able to do this!
