After leaving school in 1976 Michael became a skilled motor mechanic. After studying for a degree in Sociology in Sussex, Michael then qualified as a Primary school teacher a few years later in York. He now works full-time in an inner city primary school as a Year 3 teacher and is the Drama, Design and Technology and Art coordinator. Michael also teaches students at a teacher training college.
I decided to study this course because I wanted to do something intellectually stimulating that would support my interests in the arts. The Artist Teacher Scheme at Oxford Brookes is regarded as the best, and if you are going to spend money it is wise to choose the best. Also, for me there is nothing closer to home. The course at Brookes has excellent tutors and thought provoking activities.
There is a lot to see and do in Oxford and it feels like a safe city to be in. The museums and art galleries are brilliant and these have helped me with my studies.
In the future, if I manage to complete a Master’s degree, I would like to be more involved in student teaching and pushing forward the creative side of education. Brookes has helped me with my career by providing me with lots of practical activities and professionals with good advice. I have also gained skills by putting on an exhibition of my own.
The Pitt Rivers museum staff are amazing and full of enthusiasm for their subject. At Brookes, Rachel Payne is a fantastic tutor as nothing seems to be too much trouble, she has been very helpful.
