    Professor Lucy Vickers and Professor Simonetta Manfredi

    For ten years, Oxford Brookes’ Centre for Diversity Policy Research and Practice has specialised in research on equality and diversity in the workplace.

    Work led by Professor Lucy Vickers and Professor Simonetta Manfredi has enhanced public and policy understanding on diversity issues relating to religious belief, age discrimination and equality policies.

    They have advised human resources leaders in relation to age equality which has been shown to influence organisational policy development on retirement. This has been developed through personnel equality training programmes for a range or organisations and agencies.

    Instrumental in developing equality policy

    Within the university sector, their work on equality has been instrumental in developing the equality policy of the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the equality framework of the Research Excellence Framework 2014 itself.

    The Centre improves understanding and learning about diversity

    Research by Professor Vickers on religious equality has helped with understanding and capacity building, both nationally and within the European Union, and has underpinned legal challenges to government equality legislation.

    Work on religious discrimination led to commissioned research by the European Network of Legal Experts and a report published by the European Commission. This, together with work on religion and employment, has had considerable and far-reaching impact on policy debate in a variety of contexts.

    Centre Director Professor Simonetta Manfredi commented: “Over the past ten years, a tremendous amount of work has taken place through our research, knowledge exchange and events.

    “The wide-ranging work of the Centre has helped to improve understanding and learning about diversity and played a key role in the development of policy.

    “The Centre brings together academic and management expertise and we look forward to further influencing this crucial area in the years to come.”
