MA Childhood Studies, 2012

Both staff and students have been incredibly helpful throughout my studies especially in terms of the support I received when I undertook two modules outside my immediate field

Before I started at Oxford Brookes University I was working as a paediatric nurse in children’s outpatients. I decided to study for an MA in Childhood Studies to give me the opportunity to change my career path but also to adapt to my current role. I chose Oxford Brookes because of the multidisciplinary nature of the course and I liked the modules that were on offer, especially as I was given the opportunity to try an online module.

Since embarking on my course I feel that my confidence in my computer literacy has improved alongside my research skills. Both staff and students have been incredibly helpful throughout my studies especially in terms of the support I received when I undertook two modules outside my immediate field. One of these alternative modules was run online and although I found it challenging there was a tailor made video to accompany the material which made it more accessible. The other module was from a Psychology Masters and again the staff were very supportive especially when it came to writing my assignments. My peers on the course were also great and they too provided a stimulating learning environment. I had to have an operation whilst studying my course and my course leader, dissertation supervisor and administration support were very helpful and understanding.

The best part of being a student within the School of Education at Oxford Brookes were, the students, staff, including the library staff, and the relaxed atmosphere. Now I’ve completed my course at Oxford Brookes, I am still working part time as a paediatric nurse but in the future I hope to either work in research or continue studying; ideally I would like to keep on working with children and families.
