Early Childhood Studies and English Language and Communication

Claire Butler

I have always wanted to work with children and the course provided the necessary skill-set and learning experiences to achieve my goals. I was attracted to the course because of the wide range of modules that were offered, such as the option of placements.

Before starting my degree I was employed as a Human Resources advisor and then spent four months travelling in Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.

I have always wanted to work with children and the course provided the necessary skill-set and learning experiences to achieve my goals. I was attracted to the course because of the wide range of modules that were offered, such as the option of placements; I wanted to be able to gain experience working with children. These placements would also give a greater insight into possible career paths on completion of my studies. Undertaking a combined honours degree enabled me to combine two subjects that I was really interested in.

The mixture of modules I completed helped me to gain a thorough insight into the varied aspects of child development. The placements enabled me to gain 'hands-on' experience, many of which I can still recall and still use today!

My communication and time management skills have particularly improved since starting my course. Since beginning at Brookes my confidence has grown, making me a more confident, independent individual.

The lecturers were thoroughly supportive and approachable, which really bolstered my learning. The Early Childhood Studies team could not have been more supportive in my studies, this was especially true of my academic adviser. All staff were very approachable and always happy to help, I never felt like an inconvenience. My fellow students were also very supportive; we all had similar interests and were there to explore and expand these interests, we became a support network to one another.

The overall experience of being a student at Brookes was great. The course itself was interesting and enjoyable and gave me many experiences which will stay with me forever. Brookes offers an amazing social too life, I made friends for life here and you never have to be at a loose end if you don't want to!

I am currently studying for a PGCE at the University of East Anglia and so I have used many of the skills learnt in my undergraduate degree. In the future I hope to be a key stage 1 teacher.
