Academic Advisors
At the beginning of your course, you will be assigned an Academic Advisor whose role is to offer you help and advice throughout your stay at University. This relationship is an important one since, in addition to academic guidance, your Academic Advisor is one person to turn to if you wish to talk about a variety of other issues, for example illness, family problems and career possibilities.
Work on the relationship with your Academic Advisor – they are a valuable source of help and guidance throughout your stay at University and after you graduate if you need an academic reference.
Undergraduate students
Personalities differ and you may find that you simply do not get on with your allotted advisor. In such circumstances, you should speak to your Student Support Coordinator who can advise on changing to a different Academic Advisor. You will find out who your Academic Advisor is when you arrive. You should make a note of your meeting time, which will be via an online meeting during Week 0 (Sept 14th - 18th).All meeting times are on your induction schedule If you arrive late, you will need to contact your academic advisor to make an appointment to meet on-line (or face to face in some cases)as soon as possible in Week 1..
Apart from getting to know one another, the other important function of this first meeting is to discuss your first-year programme. Your Academic Advisor can help you to decide which optional modules you want to take in semester 2. The Student Support Coordinators (SSC)will then support you in adding your choices during week 0, as shown on your subject's Induction Timetable. You must read the information provided carefully and contact your SSC if you have any questions before the deadline at 4pm on Friday 18th Sept.
