8. Monitoring students

  August 2004 August 2003
% Students from an ethnic minority racial group % Students identified as ‘White British’, ‘White Irish’ or ‘White other’ Information not known % Students from an ethnic minority racial group % Students identified as ‘White British’, ‘White Irish’ or ‘White other’ Information not known
All students 18% 74% 9% 22% 70% 8%
State schools 17% 79% 4% 12% 86% 2%
Total home students (including EEC) 9% 83% 8% 14% 82% 4%
Overseas 67% 16% 17% 49% 33% 18%

The proportion of students with no recorded ethnic origin (not knowns) has changed very little between 2003 and 2004. This allows for comparisons to be made across the two years.

Whilst the total percentage of students an ethnic minority background has decreased slightly over the two years, it is very encouraging that the proportion of state schools students from an ethnic minority background coming to Oxford Brookes has increased from 12% to 17%. In addition over two thirds of our international students are from ethnic minority backgrounds, as compared to just under a half in 2003.

The retrieval, formatting and analysis of student statistics at university level was due to be considered under the BPR project from November 2003. The project includes development work to enable more detailed statistical analysis of the data to take place but the timing of the work has had to be deferred due to priorities elsewhere within the project. It is anticipated that the BPR project plan will reassign a deadline towards the end of the 2004/05 academic year.
