Promotion to Professor

Applications are invited annually for promotion to professor under the University's Professorial Promotion Scheme, and for advancement to levels 2, 3 or 4 for existing professors. The call for applications is annouced in Onstream normally in June with a closing date in September.

All promotion applications must be made against the criteria for one of the five pathways listed below. The five pathways recognise past achievement of the highest distinction and are based on an expectation of continuing contribution in the area for which the chair is awarded. The five pathways are:

  • research
  • teaching, learning and assessment
  • enterprise and knowledge exchange
  • professional achievement
  • academic leadership

Applications are considered by the Senior Academic Promotions Committee.

Professors are appointed on the senior staff grading structure and conditions of service.

Application Process

Candidates are required to provide:

  • A full CV demonstrating how they met the promotions criteria for the chosen pathway (maximum of 15 pages long in minimum of 10pt font with normal margins and no weblinks - see guidance on format)

  • As supporting statement outlining how they meet the criteria. This should not exceed one side of A4.

  • Critical appraisal from the Dean.

  • Names and contact details of three external references who should be fully independent, and clear authorities in the field of work concerned. They should not be existing or former colleagues, PhD supervisor, or peers with whom the applicant has worked closed. The promotions committee will have discretion to approach any of the suggested referees, or to  identify others if appropriate.

Conferment of the title of Visting Professor and Professor Emeritus

Requests from faculties to confer title should be made to the Senior Academic Promotions Committee, which normally meets in October, February and July each year.

Appointment of Visiting Fellows

Faculties should seek approval for the appointment of Visiting Fellows from the University RKE Committee.
