Enhancing the research skills and self-efficacy of novice qualitative undergraduate researchers

Mark Burgess

This four-week introductory programme for novice qualitative undergraduate researchers emphasized in-class and beyond-class mastery experiences. These were progressively structured to enhance essential data gathering skills for (i) episodic-narrative interviews (see Wengraf, 2001), (ii) analysis skills and (iii) qualitative report skills. In addition to mastery experiences, audio and video resources were used to provide vicarious learning opportunities whereby the files would act as a bridge between students’ current level of expertise and the level they would reach with additional information and experience. In this session, I comment on the structure and success of the course and also present the audio/video files.
