Learners' experiences of technology mediated collaboration

Rhona Sharpe, Greg Benfield and Ruslan Ramanau

Seven case studies were conducted on the nature and impact of technology (including wikis, discussion boards, social media and personal technology) in collaborative activities and assessment. The data from 17 interviews and one focus group were analysed and a number of themes emerged. Although the project aimed to explore the use of technology, the interviews provided an insight into the experience of assessment and groupwork. The analysis considered the use of personal tools to support collaboration, the skills and strategies learners used to participate effectively, and the choices they made about where, when and how to study.
