New REPs accredited personal training qualifications in sport degrees

It is with great pleasure that Oxford Brookes can announce that, after much hard work and combined effort, our Sport & Exercise Science and Sport, Coaching & Physical Education programmes now offer students the option to achieve level 2 (fitness instructor) and level 3 (personal trainer) qualifications, accredited by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs).
Offered by only a small number of universities nationwide, this has been a long-term goal for both programmes. The qualifications are actively sort after by the nation’s leading health and fitness clubs right up to management level. They also give graduates the skills, knowledge and qualifications they need to set themselves up with their own personal trainer business. In the current job market this is highly beneficial, allowing them to earn money from the day of graduation.
Undergraduates are now looking for added value from their significant investment. A Sport & Exercise Science Alumnus has said:
“This was a great course and I thoroughly enjoyed my time. However, after graduation employers were asking for experience and REPs membership. I had to go and pay for another 6-week course in gym to work for minimum wage having completed a degree. I cannot see the logic in supporting this nor think that it is fair to the graduate to have to go and attain these skills. Oxford Brookes have recognised this and now offer a degree that specifically equips graduates for the real world within health and fitness.”
We believe these new qualification options will have a positive impact on the employability of our graduates, equipping them with the practical and vocational attributes they need to fulfil a professional career in health, exercise and sport.
